Fisherman Survives Grizzly Bear Attack in Cardston County

A weekend fishing trip in Cardston County turned into a terrifying ordeal when a man was attacked by a grizzly bear along the St. Mary River.

Officials believe it was a defensive attack by a mother sow protecting her two cubs.

The injured fisherman was rushed to a local hospital, then transferred to Lethbridge for treatment.

Thankfully, he was released the next day and is now recovering at home.

In response, Alberta Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Services deployed bear traps and cameras, but the bear family has not been seen since the encounter.

Authorities suspect the bears have simply moved on.

This incident is a stark reminder of recent wildlife advisories across Southern Alberta, including blanket warnings for Kananaskis Country and the Bow Valley due to increased bear activity.

Albertans are urged to use extreme caution and follow bear safety protocols when outdoors.

Cardston Secures $5M Grant for Groundbreaking Water Treatment Project

The Town of Cardston is launching a pioneering environmental project after securing a significant provincial grant for a major water treatment upgrade.

A $5 million grant from Emissions Reduction Alberta will help fund the ambitious $17.9 million initiative.

This project will establish Alberta’s first-ever standalone Membrane Aerated Biofilm Reactor (MABR) Pilot, a state-of-the-art system that processes sewage more efficiently.

The advanced technology promises cleaner, more reliable water for residents, using up to 50 percent less electricity than conventional methods and lowering operational costs.

Mayor Maggie Kronen celebrated the investment, calling the upgrade a “bold shift” in sustainable infrastructure.

She expressed pride that Cardston is leading the way in embracing transformative technology.

If the pilot proves successful, it could serve as a cheaper and more environmentally friendly model for wastewater treatment in other small municipalities across the province.

Beyond the Foot Traffic: Oakville's Local Businesses Rediscover Email Marketing

For many Oakville small business owners, cutting through the constant online noise is a daily challenge.

While social media gets attention, a quieter tool is proving to be a game-changer: email marketing.

A well-crafted newsletter offers a direct line to your most loyal customers, building a relationship based on trust.

The key is to provide genuinely valuable content, with promotional messages used sparingly.

Building a mailing list is the first step, turning every customer interaction—from the checkout counter to Chamber of Commerce events—into an opportunity.

However, this comes with a major responsibility to respect privacy.

Always get consent before sending messages and provide a clear way to opt out to protect your reputation.

Fortunately, modern platforms simplify this process with professional templates and powerful data, tracking what content resonates with your local customers and helping you refine your strategy over time.
